After Anna University vice-chancellor MK Surappa directly wrote to the Central government seeking change in varsity’s status, Tamil Nadu government has written to him and demanded an explanation for his proposal. It should be noted that the requested change in status would affect the reservation policy of the university.
MK Surappa stirred a storm when he wrote directly to the Centre proposing the university would be able to meet easily the requirement of Rs 314 crore a year (Rs 1,570 crore for five years) to get Institute of Eminence (IoE) status.
His proposal came when the AIADMK-led Tamil Nadu government had expressed concerns that the IoE status to the university would affect its reservation policy.
In its letter to the VC, the state government pointed to the revised proposal written by the VC to the Union HRD Ministry in June, in connection with the IoE. The govt asked him to specify the resources under which the amount could be generated and report to it at the earliest.
