Indian Institute of Management Ranchi had the privilege of hosting General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.), Minister of State for External Affairs, Govt. of India as the Chief Guest of the event. He delivered the inaugural lecture of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Centre for Leadership, Policy and Governance at IIM Ranchi. The session, which was attended by faculty and students, began with an address by Prof. (Dr.) Shailendra Singh, Director of the Institute.
Dr. Singh talked about the journey of IIM Ranchi and the contribution made by the faculty and students to their respective fields. He expressed his admiration of Dr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his personal interactions with the leader. He further discussed how IIM Ranchi has contributed to government initiatives like Digital India, Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Rashtriya Ekta Diwas before this Idea lab on Leadership, Policy and Governance. General V.K. Singh shared an anecdote from his life emphasizing the need of effective communication to the students.
He shared how his background in the Armed Forces taught him effective governance and leadership. His insights on what differentiates leader and managers, and the ingredients of great leadership inspired the students. General Singh also explained how good governance leads to policy implementation by giving examples of Bharat Ratna Nanaji Deshmukh and Anna Hazare and inspired one and all with his thought-provoking answers to students’ curiosities. He left the students with a strong message that India needs leaders who are good managers and not the other way round.
