Once again, three universities of West Bengal, namely, North Bengal University, Vidyasagar University and Raiganj University, have decided to conduct the final semester examinations in online mode. Subiresh Bhattacharya, the vice-chancellor of North Bengal University, told PTI, “we will be conducting final semester exams from October 1 to 8 in virtual mode.”
He also said that in online mode the question paper will be sent by email, and students have to write their paper and have to submit it after scanning it within 24 hours of commencement of examination. The date of publishing the results may vary, according to the university rule. But other few universities are having second thoughts regarding the pros and cons for the online examinations, such as poor network connectivity or students’ awareness for the examination. ABVP National Secretary Saptarshi Sarkar said, “we had always been against the mass promotion of students. We had always talked about proper evaluation based on which the students’ results will be decided. We are happy that after SC verdict the state government has also asked universities to conduct tests by October. Whether in online or offline mode exams need to be held. This is necessary for the career of students.”
West Bengal higher education department as has asked the education department to inform universities to conduct the final examinations. SC has allowed any state to individually approach the UGC for holding the exams but said that the tests should be conducted.
