The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur stepped into its 164th year today, 24th November being its foundation day. The inception of the institute took place on this day as the Civil Engineering College in the British Colonial India in 1856. Since then it has started the Tryst with Engineering Education in the pre and post – independent India.
As a standing testimony to various upheavals on the societal and the national front, withstanding all tremors, the Institute has moved on; and has nurtured talent and made them blossom. Permanent landmarks in West Bengal, India and even on the global scene bear the stamp of engineering feats of the alumni from this institute.
Prof. Dr. Parthasarathi Chakrabarti, Director IIESTS has ideated the celebration of the foundation day of the Institute and has been enthusiastic to observe it on a grand scale. Prof. Dr. Amitabha Ghosh, former Director of IIT Kharagpur was the Chief Guest to his Alma Mater today. He is known across India as the Grand Old Man of Science and Technology and very rightly pointed out how the IIT system of Education was drafted at this institute by the policy makers where some of them were members of the faculty of the B.E College. He also reminded that the initial framework and functioning of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dhaka and Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad were done from this Institute.
One of the notable events of the day was the felicitation of the retired officers, staff- members and mess workers who have cared deeply for the students in their hostels, workshops, laboratories and offices. These unheard words of appreciation for their work from the Institute Authority will light a flame of recognition in their hearts. A new Institute Website was also launched on the occasion. A documentary created in-house was also screened on the occasion. The updated Institute Archive was also inaugurated on this occasion.
The Institute has transformed itself from catering to youngsters from all cross-sections of Bengal, it now is a favorable destination to also students across India and few foreign countries. That time is awaited when there will be boys and girls from across the globe who will come in large numbers to this place to build up a very bright future.
