Pvt schools shut down for bandh, parents unhappy

Most private schools in the city remained closed on Monday due to a two-day holiday announced on account of Bharat Bandh call by Left parties and trade unions, while government schools reported thin or nil attendance.

Parents expressed concern that with schools closed for six days since Thursday for civic polls, pre-schoolers will again lose interest to go to schools while the unscheduled closure will delay the completion of syllabus.

After two years of closure, we managed to convince our child to go to school with much difficulty. She was inconsolable while we were dropping her at the school gate. After three days, she had started liking the school but then it closed for elections, weekend, and now Bharat Bandh. After six days at home, my child will again cry while going to school,” said Arpita
Priyadarshini, mother of a toddler.

Schools said they had decided to announce a two-day holiday on Monday and Tuesday keeping in view the safety of children.

In government schools the attendance was thin or almost nil, but teachers had to come. “Education has taken a back seat due to unscheduled holidays when things were just starting to fall in pace. Such disruptions in classroom teaching may cause a delay in completing the courses,” said a government school teacher.
