Shivamogga Schools, Colleges to remain shut till February 23

Schools and Colleges are announced to remain shut in Karnataka’s Shivamogga city till February 23, 2022. Shivamogga Schools, Colleges closure was announced on February 21 by the Deputy Commissioner Selvamani R. The decision has been taken amid tensions pertaining in the city after a 23-year-old Bajrang Dal activist was stabbed to death. 

As per the initial orders, schools are announced to close for two days, till tomorrow. Depending upon the situation school, college closure can be extended in the city. However, no official confirmation has been announced. 

Along with the closure of educational institutions, authorities have also declared Section 144 in the city to maintain law and order. Following this, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that he is hopeful that culprits will be arrested soon. This tragic incident has raised the tensions in the state and has fueled the ongoing tensions. A PTI report quoted state CM, “I want to tell the people of Shivamogga that we have taken steps to arrest the murderers at the earliest. No one should fall prey to the rumours. They should maintain law and order.”


Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, “A 23-year old youth has been killed. Such incidents should not happen. Police have got the clue and surely they (the accused) will be arrested soon. I appeal to people to maintain calm.” 

Schools and colleges in Karnataka were reopened completely on February 16. However, restrictions were implemented in areas where the Hijab led protests were ongoing. Karnataka is witnessing protests after some educational institutions restricted entry for the students wearing  Hijab and said only prescribed uniforms will be allowed inside the campus.
