CUSB Computer Science Department celebrates Software Freedom Day


The Department of Computer Science at the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) celebrated Software Freedom Day to raise awareness and promote the benefits of using open-source software. Organized under the patronage of CUSB Vice Chancellor Prof. Kameshwar Nath Singh and the guidance of Department of Computer Science Head Prof. Prabhat Ranjan, the event included expert lectures and software-related activities for students. Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mohammad Mudassir Alam stated that the event was attended by faculty members, researchers, students, and faculty members.

Addressing the event, Dr. Jayanath Yadav (Associate Professor, CS) discussed the benefits of open-source software in computer applications, explaining that open-source software refers to software whose source code is freely available to everyone. It can be modified, improved, and used at no cost. Globally, Software Freedom Day is celebrated every year in the third week of September to raise public awareness about open-source software. Dr. Nemi Chandra Rathore (Associate Professor, CS) highlighted the challenges faced by open-source communities, particularly lack of awareness and inadequate advertising. Dr. Piyush Kumar Singh (Assistant Professor, CS) explained the importance of open-source tools like LaTeX and noted that many people use open-source software daily without even realizing it. Dr. Mrityunjay Kumar Singh (Assistant Professor, CS) emphasized the need to develop a culture of open-source use and promote it across all institutions. Dr. Prakash Kumar (Assistant Professor, CS) reiterated the benefits of open-source software and stressed the importance of organizing regular awareness programs to encourage its adoption.

Various events, including Fosword, a coding competition, a code hunt, Rising Penguins, and poster presentations, were organized on the occasion. Approximately 50 students participated in the Fosword program. After a fierce competition and tie-breaker round, Akanksha Kumari (MSc AI, 1st Semester) secured first place, while Johnson Ekka (MSc AI, 1st Semester) was declared the runner-up. In the coding competition, Pravangshu Saha was declared the winner, while Mohammad Sajid Ashraf secured the runner-up position. In the C-Code Hunt, Team 7, consisting of Abhishek Kumar, Jibaash Sahu, and Sushant Kumar Singh, was declared the winner, while Team 3, consisting of Pravangshu Saha, Sweta Kumari, and Aranya Kumar, secured the runner-up position. Thirty students from various courses participated in the poster presentation competition. The group of Karishma Kumari, Ritika Kumari, Nisha Kumari, and Saloni Mehta secured first place, while the team of Adarsh ​​Kumar and Vivek Kumar was declared the runner-up. A workshop titled "Rising Penguins" focused on the power and flexibility of open-source operating systems, with presentations by students Shivam Kumar and Aditya Kumar.
