Class 3 student dies as school toilet roof collapses on him in Champawat


Dehradun: In an incident of complete civic negligence, an 8-year-old student lost his life after a roof of the school toilet fell on him at a school in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. The deceased has been identified as Chandan, a student of Class 3.

Three other children were also injured in the incident that took place at Pati sector of Champawat. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed condolence over the death and ordered a probe into the incident.  

The incident took place when the children were playing near the toilet at the government primary school. The roof the toilet was damaged and it fell on the students killing one on the spot, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

The other injured students have been identified as Soni, Rinku, and Shaguni, said sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Rinku Bisht.

Meanwhile, local residents claimed that they had complained to the school authorities in the past about deteriorated condition of the building. However, authorities did not take any interest and ignored the complaint.

"Had the school authorities heeded to our complaints, the life of a innocent boy could have been saved," the report quoted Godhan Singh, the parent of an injured student.

Meanwhile, an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh has been announced to the family of the deceased student. The chief minister has asked all school authorities to examine the conditions of the buildings and ensure repairs those. Dhami also emphasised that schools should only be run in safe buildings.
